The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged the National Assembly to provide the necessary legislative and financial backing to strengthen the implementation of Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy.
Speaking at an investigative hearing by the house of representatives committee on the implementation of the compressed natural gas, CNG ,policy in Nigeria, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the initiative as a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol and diesel.
The Corps Marshal, who was represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Abiodun Akinlade, said the FRSC is already involved in the CNG rollout, including registering converted vehicles, enforcing safety rules, and conducting joint inspections of conversion facilities.
He pointed out that CNG is significantly less volatile than petrol, with an ignition point of 540°C compared to 280°C, making it safer in the event of accidents.
The agency also noted fuel savings of up to 60%, fewer breakdowns, and reduced engine wear.
He explained that to support the transition, the FRSC is updating its inspection protocols, training staff, working on national safety standards, and planning the inclusion of CNG modules in driving school curricula.
The agency made three key recommendations to lawmakers: certification of conversion workshops, funding for training and equipment, and mandatory CNG compliance during roadworthiness tests.
“With your support and synergy among stakeholders, we can build a cleaner, safer, and smarter transport system,” the Corps Marshall told the lawmakers.
