CNG Policy Critical To Nig’s Energy Transition Agenda

todayAugust 1, 2025

Background

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen has described Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, policy as a critical part of the country’s energy transition agenda, aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting cleaner alternatives.

Speaking at an investigative hearing organized by the House Ad-Hoc Committee on the Implementation of the CNG Policy, Dr Abbas said the policy marks a strategic shift towards safer, cleaner, and more economically viable fuel options, especially in the transportation sector.

“With our abundant natural gas reserves, promoting CNG as a motor fuel is not only logical but essential to achieving energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic diversification,” he said.

Represented by member representing Jibia/Kaita Federal Constituency, Katsina, Sada Soli, Dr Abbas explained that the hearing was convened to assess the progress of the CNG policy, examine implementation challenges, and ensure transparency and accountability in its rollout.

He recalled that the CNG initiative was introduced as a palliative and long-term solution to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal, with expectations to lower transportation costs, improve air quality, and stimulate the gas value chain.

However, he noted rising concerns over the pace of implementation, infrastructure readiness, safety standards, and long-term viability.

“As the People’s Parliament, we are obligated to provide oversight on policies affecting Nigerians’ welfare,” Abbas said. “Our concern lies not only in the policy’s intent but in how it is being executed.”

He urged participants at the hearing to provide honest, constructive feedback.

“This is not a forum for blame games, but for solutions. Let us put Nigeria first,” he said.
