FG Launches Nationwide Campaign To Address Housing Deficit

todayJuly 30, 2025

Background

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at making affordable housing a reality for millions of citizens, part of sweeping structural and economic reforms to address the country’s growing housing deficit.

Speaking at the opening of the 19th Africa International Housing Show in Abuja, Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ahmed Musa Dangiwa outlined the Tinubu administration’s strategy to create sustainable housing solutions by tackling inflation, stabilizing the naira, and raising household incomes.

The centrepiece of the initiative is a State-by-State Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign, designed to bridge the gap between federal policy and state-level implementation. Housing reform advisers will be embedded in state governments, supported by technical assistance and funding.

The Renewed Hope Housing Programme, a flagship effort under the campaign, will span three tiers.

Renewed Hope Cities, targeting urban hubs with integrated infrastructure;

Renewed Hope Estates, set for 30 states;

Renewed Hope Social Housing, offering subsidized units in every local government area.

To make home financing more accessible, the government has introduced a 12% interest Real Estate Investment Fund and new options such as rent-to-own and rental assistance schemes through the Federal Mortgage Bank.

More than 150 urban renewal projects are underway to improve roads, water supply, and solar energy in underserved areas. The federal government is also establishing building materials hubs in all six geopolitical zones to cut costs and boost local manufacturing.

Former Minister Jerry Gana and other stakeholders called for expanded local production, decentralized infrastructure management, and sustained public-private partnerships to tackle the estimated 22 million housing shortfall.

An expert-led committee will also monitor implementation of the reforms, signaling what officials say is a renewed political will to deliver measurable change in the sector.
