UNIPORT Honours Wike, Names Convocation Arena After Him

todayJuly 26, 2025

Background

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State, has officially named its convocation arena after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in recognition of his contributions to the institution’s development.

The newly completed arena was inaugurated today by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as part of activities marking the university’s 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary celebration.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, recalled that the university held its first convocation in 1982 at the old arena.

He praised the transformation made possible by the Rivers State Government during Wike’s administration.

We are proud to celebrate our 35th convocation, coinciding with our golden jubilee, in this magnificent facility built under the leadership of His Excellency, Nyesom Wike,” Georgewill stated.

In his remarks, Vice Admiral Ibas commended Wike’s enduring contributions to infrastructural and educational advancement. He noted that the arena stands as a powerful symbol of visionary leadership and commitment to academic excellence.

This ultra-modern convocation arena is more than just a venue; it is a beacon of achievement, a place where dreams are fulfilled, and future leaders are honoured,” Ibas said. “Its purpose extends beyond convocation ceremonies. It will host policy dialogues, innovation exhibitions, and events that will shape future generations.”

He further described the arena’s inauguration as symbolic, representing a continuity of excellence and a bridge between the past and the future.

In response, Wike expressed his deep appreciation to the university community for the recognition and the honour bestowed upon him. He was also conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science (D.Sc. Honoris Causa).

“I am truly humbled by this honour, which my wife and entire family consider profoundly significant and gratifying,” Wike said. “UNIPORT gave me a strong foundation, both intellectually and morally, and I have always believed in giving back as a token of gratitude.”

He added that his consistent support for the institution reflects his commitment to strengthening the legacy of quality education.

Other notable recipients of honorary doctorate degrees included the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State; and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
