In a major political development at the National Assembly, four Senators previously elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The announcement was made during plenary in Abuja by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, who read separate letters from each of the lawmakers.
The Senators cited unresolved internal crises and what they described as irreconcilable differences within the PDP as reasons for their decision.
The affected lawmakers are Senators Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East, Oluwole Olubiyi from Osun Central, Aniekan Bassey representing Akwa Ibom North East, and Samson Ekong from Akwa Ibom South.
The Senate President directed the Clerk of the Senate to document the defections in the official records.
Following this shift, the composition of the 10th Senate now stands as follows: APC – 70 seats, PDP – 28, Labour Party – 5, SDP – 2, NNPP – 1, and APGA – 1.
Also present at the plenary were top APC figures, including the party’s National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru and former Labour Minister Senator Chris Ngige, alongside several members of the House of Representatives, who came to show solidarity.
This latest realignment is expected to further strengthen the ruling party’s influence in the upper chamber.
