The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas, Tajudeen
has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws that protect press freedom and promote gender equity.
Dr Abbas stated this in Abuja at the 2025 Press Week hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council,
Represented by the
Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Institutions, Patrick Umoh, Dr Abbas emphasized the importance of journalism in strengthening democracy.
“Journalists across Nigeria have shown courage in promoting electoral transparency and amplifying marginalized voices.”
“We see the media as both a watchdog and a partner in building a transparent and accountable democratic order.” Dr Abbas said.
The Speaker called for stronger media efforts to combat misinformation and urged newsrooms, civil society groups, and government institutions to work together on coordinated fact-checking initiatives.
He also proposed the development of a national ethical code for digital journalism and pledged legislative backing for such efforts.
At the event, the speaker was honoured with the NUJ’s Gender Advocacy and Leadership Award.
