As the House of Representatives prepares to hold public hearings on the ongoing constitutional amendment process across Southern Nigeria, calls are intensifying for greater inclusivity in governance—particularly for increased female representation in legislative bodies.
President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Hon. Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, has thrown her weight behind a key proposal under consideration—House Bill 1349—which seeks to reserve specific seats for women in both the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.
Describing the bill as “a significant step toward promoting gender equality,” Awunah-Ikyegh emphasized the urgent need to correct the current underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s political leadership.
“Despite their immense contributions to society, women remain vastly underrepresented in decision-making positions,” she said. “This bill aims to ensure that women’s voices are not only heard but also valued in the corridors of power.”

According to her, increased female participation in governance will lead to more inclusive legislation, diverse perspectives, and stronger policy outcomes that reflect the needs of all citizens.
She noted that women in leadership also serve as role models and mentors, helping to build a pipeline for future female leaders.
Hon. Awunah-Ikyegh commended the House of Representatives for what she termed “a bold and commendable move,” and urged civil society organizations, community leaders, and individuals to engage fully in the upcoming public hearings.
“I encourage all stakeholders—women’s groups, NGOs, and concerned citizens—to participate actively and make their voices count,” she stated.
The public hearings are scheduled to hold across the South South, South East, and South West zones, as part of the national efforts to review and amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
Awunah-Ikyegh concluded with a passionate call to action:
“Together, we can create a more just and equitable society where women’s voices are heard and valued. Let us work together for a more inclusive Nigeria.
