Stakeholders from Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states have demanded the restructuring of Nigeria’s federal system, calling for state police, devolution of powers, and the inclusion of more women in governance.
They made their submissions at the South-West Zonal Centre A public hearing on constitutional amendment, held in Lagos and organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy Obafemi Hamzat, said the establishment of state police would help combat insecurity more effectively across the country.
The South-West Conference of Nigeria Speakers, who represented by the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, called for the formal recognition of traditional rulers in the constitution.
Representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress urged that labour matters remain on the federal Exclusive Legislative List.
Other groups pushed for local government autonomy, state creation, and gender inclusion.
Actress Joke Silva and UN Women Country Representative Beatrice Eyong both called for more opportunities and constitutional backing for women’s participation in politics and public service.
Chairman of the Zonal Committee, who is also the Deputy Chief Whip, Isiaka Ibrahim, promised that the review process would be open, fair, and reflective of public input.
