The Governments of Cross River and Rivers states have declared support for the creation of state police, new sates and local government autonomy as part of ongoing constitutional review.
They made their positions known at the South-South public hearing on the constitution review held in Calabar, Cross River State, where stakeholders gathered to discuss proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Bassey Otu, the Cross River Deputy Governor Peter Odey, said the event marked a historic opportunity to reshape the nation’s legal foundation and better reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.
He noted that some provisions of the current constitution are outdated and emphasized the need for reforms that include state policing, greater inclusion of women and persons with disabilities, and the creation of new states.
“The people of Cross River State believe this is the right time to get it right,” he said. “State creation should not be limited to military decisions alone.”

Mrs Vera Sam-Dike who spoke on behalf of the State Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas of Rivers State also declared support for 73 proposed constitutional amendment bills.
“We support reforms that promote inclusiveness, peace, unity, and economic growth,” she said.
Rivers also backed proposals for state police, electoral and judicial reforms, recognition of traditional institutions, and increased representation for people living with disabilities.
“The current security challenges are overwhelming. State policing will help because states understand their own terrain better,” Sam-Dike added.
Both states called on the National Assembly to adopt citizen-driven reforms and continue consultations to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework.
