The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Council, says it will revive press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja as part of efforts to raise ethical and professional journalists.
During an engagement at the Government Secondary School, Garki, the NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Yahaya Ndababo, said the initiative seeks to promote professionalism from the grassroots.
“Our goal is to empower students with journalistic skills and values early on,” Mr. Ndababo said, while representing the council at the session.
The official launch of the initiative – dubbed the Press Club Revival Project – will begin on Thursday, 24 July, with two pilot schools.
The matron of the GSS Garki Press Club, Mrs Udofia Emauwa Unyime, welcomed the programme, calling it “a timely and visionary effort” that would inspire students to pursue careers in journalism.
The move forms a key part of the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and Society.”
The week-long celebration aims to reinforce press freedom, encourage civic responsibility and support inclusive journalism at the community level.
