Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged Nigerians to take an active role in the ongoing constitutional review process by demanding transparency, accountability, and fairness from public officials.
Speaking at a public hearing in Owerri, which serves Imo and Abia states, Kalu said citizen participation is crucial to shaping a constitution that reflects the nation’s collective aspirations.
“This is your Constitution. This is your moment,” Kalu said, calling on residents to contribute memoranda and voice their concerns. “We are listening.”
The deputy speaker, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, emphasized that reform is a process, not an event, and stressed the importance of sustained public engagement to ensure meaningful outcomes.
Kalu disclosed that the committee is currently reviewing 87 bills, with key focus areas including judicial independence, electoral reform, state policing, gender equality, and fiscal federalism.
He also praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in creating a reform-focused environment, calling his support “crucial” to the process.
Kalu and his committee also paid a courtesy visit to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, where they briefed him on the committee’s activities in the state.
Similar public hearings are taking place across the southern region, following last week’s sessions in the north.
