The 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Federal Capital Territory FCT, Council Press Week commenced with a congregational prayer at the NASFAT Mosque in Utako, Abuja.
Delivering the sermon, the Acting Zonal Missionary Imam of NASFAT FCT, Imam Marouf Farouji, urged journalists to remain committed to truth, ethics, and service to humanity.
He emphasized the Quran’s teachings on information, communication, and accountability, warning that ignorance fuels corruption, while proper awareness promotes responsible governance.
“The Qur’an speaks to every facet of life, including journalism. When the people are misinformed, society suffers. But knowledge and understanding drive ethical choices,” the cleric said.
He commended journalists across platforms—print, broadcast, and digital—for their vital role in shaping society.
“Journalism transcends religion. Whether Muslim or Christian, journalists are crucial to enlightenment and civic responsibility. May Allah continue to guide and protect them,” he added.
Representing the NUJ FCT Council at the event, the Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo said the prayer session was a nod to Nigeria’s deeply rooted religious values.
“Journalists reflect the religious diversity of our country. Starting with an Islamic prayer is symbolic, and we’ll complement it with a Christian service on Sunday,” he noted.
Ndambabo added that the week’s events would focus not only on spiritual reflection but also on the welfare of journalists.
He said top priorities include advocacy for improved housing, better protection for media professionals, and renewed efforts to uphold press freedom.
Other key activities lined up for the Press Week include a public lecture and re-establishment of press clubs in secondary schools across the FCT.
He concluded with a strong appeal for journalistic integrity: “We must uphold the highest ethical standards. Combating fake news starts with us.”
The solemn gathering drew journalists from Abuja and surrounding areas, setting a reflective tone for the week’s events.
