2024 WAFCON: Super Falcons Blast to 13th Consecutive Semifinal

todayJuly 18, 2025

Background

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured a slot in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup Nation (WAFCON) semi finals for the 13th consecutive time after dismantling the Copper Queens of Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 edition on Friday, at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

The nine time African women champions started with a blistering pace as Osinachi Ohale’s powerful header found the net after just three minutes, giving Nigeria an early lead.

Super Falcons doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute, when a ball from captain Rasheedat Ajibade delivered a precise ball to the feet of Esther Okworonkwo who wasted no time to strike the ball past Zambia goalkeeper, Ngambo Musole.

The dominant display continued as a miscommunication at the back in the 45th minute allowed Chinwendu Ihezuo to capitalize and extend the lead for the West African giants, making it 3-0 just before halftime.

Heading into the second half Zambia tried to hold off the attacking power from the coach Justin Madugu’s ladies for most of the half.

However, in the 68th minute, another brilliant delivery into the box found Tosin Demehin, who headed home to extend Nigeria’s lead to 4-0.

Sealing the deal victory for Nigeria, WAFCON debutant Folashade Ijamilusi scored her first-ever competitive goal for the Super Falcons. She tapped in a low cross from Rasheedat Ajibade in the final moments, completing the 5-0 rout.

The victory sees Super Falcons in the race to extend their title run as the most dominant women’s footballing nation.

With this commanding win, Nigeria now awaits the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final clash between defending WAFCON champions South Africa and Senegal at Stade de l’Honneur, Oujda, to determine their semi-final opponent.
