The 12th edition of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) National Swimming Championship officially commenced on Tuesday, July 16, 2025 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Swimming Arena in Asaba, Delta State.
Originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, the opening ceremony was rescheduled to July 16 in line with the Federal Government’s declaration of a national day of mourning to honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

Despite the adjustment, the championship got underway on Wednesday with preliminary heats in various categories, including the 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, and the 4x100m mixed relay. Swimmers from across the country—representing states, clubs, military, paramilitary, and educational institutions—dove into action from 3:00 p.m. on Day 1.
More than 13 teams have already registered, with additional entries expected as the event progresses. The competition aims to spotlight Nigeria’s top swimming talents, serving as both a national ranking event and a key platform for identifying future international representatives.
A representative of the Nigerian Navy reaffirmed the CNS’s dedication to grassroots sports development, particularly in aquatic disciplines.
“This championship is not just a contest of speed and strength; it is a celebration of discipline, endurance, and national unity through sports.”
The Delta State Government, a major supporter of the event, has pledged both logistical and moral support to ensure the competition’s success. The championship runs through the week, with finals scheduled over the weekend.
As athletes battle for glory in the pool, the 12th CNS Swimming Championship stands as both a celebration of youth and excellence—and a solemn tribute during a time of national reflection.
