todayJuly 14, 2025

Background

The leadership of the National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former President, aged 82, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London during a brief illness.

A statement in Abuja by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, says all proceedings would be suspended until Tuesday, July 22, to honor the late leader and allow members to participate in burial activities.

According to the Statement, Buhari will be remembered for his emphasis on national unity and his reputation for personal integrity.

The leadership of the National Assembly, on behalf of members and staff, extends heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, President Bola Tinubu, the government and people of Katsina State and Nigerians at large.

The legislature prayed for Allah to grant the former president eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
