The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, Mr Fuad Kayode Laguda, has criticized polytechnic rectors across the country for failing to attend a key meeting convened to discuss reforms in technical education.
Speaking during a meeting in Abuja at the National Assembly complex, Laguda said fewer than 30 percent of invited rectors were present, accusing them of treating the legislature with disregard and showing little interest in ongoing efforts to strengthen the sector.
“We called this meeting to find out if you have grievances or if there’s something we’re not doing right,” Laguda said.
“This same committee is advocating for a National Polytechnic Commission, pushing for increased funding, and sponsoring a bill to criminalize the HND–BSc dichotomy—all without lobbying from your end. Yet, the institutions are not cooperating.”
The Lawmaker warned that failure to comply with future invitations or directives could lead to sanctions, describing the poor turnout as a clear sign of disrespect for parliamentary oversight.
“You don’t need to flatter us with words of respect—your actions speak louder,” he added. “We sent you letters with clear instructions on how to attend and who should accompany you. You ignored that.”
In response, some rectors present at the meeting acknowledged the committee’s concerns and pledged to improve communication and compliance.
Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Daura, Musa Gambo
apologized on behalf of his colleagues, saying they were committed to making amends.
On his part, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Zamfara, Aminu Yusuf blamed the low attendance on communication gaps, not disrespect. “I assure the committee that within one week, I will respond to all pending requests,” he said.
Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi,
Sani Usman affirmed that his institution takes all correspondence from the House seriously and ensures timely submissions.
