Nigeria, Malawi Pledge Deeper Parliamentary Ties

todayJuly 12, 2025

Background

Nigeria and Malawi have pledged to deepen parliamentary ties following a visit by Malawi’s First Deputy Speaker, Madalitso Kazombo, to the National Assembly in Abuja.

Mr Kazombo, who led a parliamentary delegation to Nigeria, was received by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu.

The visit is part of efforts to boost bilateral legislative relations and share democratic experiences.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Kazombo said Malawi had much to learn from Nigeria, particularly in the area of legislative development.

He also praised Nigeria’s cultural diversity and culinary offerings.

Speaking under the theme “Strengthening Parliamentary Ties between Nigeria and Malawi,” Mr Kazombo stressed the importance of legislative diplomacy in advancing democratic norms.

He pointed to Malawi’s journey since its independence in 1964 and underscored the country’s push for greater youth participation in politics.

Also speaking, the Deputy Speaker, Kalu highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional review, which seeks to expand women’s participation in governance and lower the age requirements for elective offices to include more young people.

He also raised concerns about the migration of African youths to Europe, calling for stronger collaboration among African parliaments to create local opportunities and sustainable development.

“We must work together to harness our collective resources for the betterment of the continent,” Mr Kalu said.

The two sides discussed the possibility of establishing a Malawian High Commission in Nigeria and agreed to promote further legislative exchanges.

The visit, officials say, marks a renewed commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive governance across Africa.
