The Senate has responded to recent claims by the House of Representatives accusing the red chamber of stalling legislative progress by delaying concurrence on House-passed bills.
During Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja ,President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele rejected the allegations, stating clearly that the Senate remains committed to its legislative responsibilities and to fostering cooperation with the green chamber.
They disclosed that the Senate had considered no fewer than six concurrence bills from the House just last week.
The House of Representatives had earlier resolved to suspend further action on bills originating from the Senate, citing alleged neglect by the red chamber in addressing over 140 bills passed by the House, including several sponsored by its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.
In a reaction, Senator Akpabio emphasized that the Senate “cannot joke with concurrence bills from the House of Representatives,” and stressed that both chambers must collaborate in the national interest.
“It takes two hands to clap,” he said. “We have been attending to the bills from the House. We will continue to work together for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.”
