Member representing Orumba North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Princess Chinwe Nnabuife, has called for a transparent and impartial investigation after at least 10 people were killed in a violent attack in Ogboji, a town in Anambra state.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Princess Nnabuife who described the killings as a “horrific act” said that the victims, all of whom were members of the Ebonyi community living in Ogboji, were attacked during what was meant to be a peaceful meeting of the Ebonyi Union.
“This is an attack on our collective humanity. No Nigerian deserves to be murdered in cold blood,” she said.
According to her, Preliminary reports suggest the violence was sparked by an internal leadership dispute within the Ebonyi Union in Ogboji.
“There was no indication of ethnic or communal tension between the Ebonyi residents and their Anambra hosts.
“All indications show this was an intra-group crisis among members of the same ethnic background,” she said.
The lawmaker said prior tensions between factions of the Ebonyi Union had been reported to local authorities, including allegations that a breakaway group absconded with union records and funds.
The clash reportedly escalated when one faction resisted reconciliation.
Nnabuife commended local leaders, youth vigilantes, and residents for their swift response in stabilizing the community and preventing further violence.
She also praised the Ebonyi community in Ogboji for showing restraint and unity despite the tragedy.
She urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and both Anambra and Ebonyi State Governments to take immediate action in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators.
She also called on the Federal Government to provide relief and psychological support to survivors and families of the victims.
“The time for action is now. Justice must be served to ensure that such tragedies do not repeat themselves,” she said.
No arrests have been confirmed as investigations continue.
