Deputy Speaker Unveils Compedium Of 86 Constitution Amendment Bills

todayJuly 2, 2025

Background

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has unveiled a summarized compendium of 86 constitution amendment bills currently under consideration.

The bills, compiled by the House Committee on Constitution Review, span 13 thematic areas, including electoral and judicial reforms, Policing and security, devolution of powers, local government autonomy, traditional institutions, fiscal federalism, and human rights.

Other areas are citizenship rights, creation of new states and councils, state policing and security.

Addressing a Media Conference in Abuja alongside some members of the committee, Kalu who also doubles as the Chairman House Committee on Constitution review said the compendium contains explanatory memoranda and detailed summaries of each bill, aimed at making the legislative proposals accessible to the public.

The purpose is to ensure that citizens are fully informed and can actively engage in shaping the future of our constitution,” he said. “Public feedback will help guide lawmakers when the bills are brought to the floor for voting.”

The Deputy Speaker announced that zonal public hearings will be held across the country in 12 centres within the six geopolitical zones.

The northern hearings are scheduled for July 11–13, while those in the southern zones will take place from July 18–20.

A national public hearing is also slated for July 21 in Abuja.

The lawmaker, while calling on Nigerians to contribute to the ongoing constitutional reform process, encouraged the citizens to download the compendium from www.hccr.gov.ng, study the proposed amendments, and participate in the hearings.

These reforms reflect the legislative will to address the nation’s governance challenges, and we need every citizen’s voice to make this process successful,” Kalu added.
