INEC Wants RECs To Take Full Responsibility Of Electoral Process

todayJuly 1, 2025

Background

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it will soon release the supplement on election Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

INEC Chairman Professor Mahmoud Yakubu who stated this in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, explained that the guidelines would provide clarity on the review of declaration and return at elections.

Professor Yakubu told the RECs that they do not need an elaborate conference or workshop to build the capacity of their staff to improve on their knowledge of new policies and practical innovations introduced by the Commission to improve electoral service delivery to Nigerians.

He also asked them to provide the Commission with information on their plans to enhance the electoral process.

Professor Yakubu reminded the RECs that already, the Commission had announced the dates for a number of elections and electoral activities for the next one year which included bye-elections in 12 States of the Federation, the Anambra State Governorship election, the Area Council elections in the FCT, the Ekiti and Osun Governorship election.

‘’The Commission has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for these elections and some of the activities have already been carried out, the latest being the commencement of campaign by Political Parties in Anambra State, the publication of the Notice of Election for the Ekiti State Governorship election and the conclusion of party primaries for the FCT Area Council elections.’’

He urged them to ensure that they work according to the oath of office and ensure justice to all Nigerians irrespective of who they are in the society.
