Reps Investigate CNG Policy Implementation For Safety

todayJune 27, 2025

Background

Amid growing concerns over fairness, safety, and regulation, the House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas policy, also known as the CNG policy.

The ad hoc committee, inaugurated at the National Assembly, is expected to probe how the policy is being executed and whether conversion centres are being established equitably across the country.

Chairman of the committee, Ahmed Jaha from Borno State, said the goal is to ensure the policy aligns with global best practices and delivers real benefits to all Nigerians.

Jaha who explained that the committee will meet with government agencies, international oil companies, and other stakeholders added that it will also review the legal framework governing the policy and recommend changes if gaps are found.

Jaha praised leadership of the house for the composition of the committee, saying that it is made up of very experienced, active, and hardworking lawmakers.

“I therefore urge you all to look at the mandate of the Committee as gleaned from the Votes and Proceedings to guide our deliberations in order to enhance the work plan already being drafted by the secretariat.

“The House of Representatives has on Thursday, May 2025, considered a motion titled “Call to Establish More Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Centres Across Nigeria.”

In their resolution on the motion, the house urged the federal government to establish CNG centers equitably across the country to give Nigerians a sense of belonging.

The green chambers also resolved to set up an Ad hoc Committee to investigate the implementation of the CNG Policy in Nigeria.

Accordingly, on Thursday, May 25, 2025, Speaker of the House, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, announced the constitution and composition of the Ad hoc committee made up 11 members.
