As Nigeria commemorates this year’s Democracy Day, citizens have renewed calls for the Government to prioritize improving the standard of living in rural communities.
A cross section of residents in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Lokoja highlighted the urgent need for basic social amenities and infrastructure in rural areas.
A Retired Civil Servant, Mr Danladi Okpani lamented that after twenty six years of democracy, his hometown, Ofaji Abocho lacks government presence of basic amenities.
According to him, the roads in the village have become impassable.
Also, an Octogenarian in the community, Mrs Amichi Malo, who decried the poor state of education and the healthcare system in the area, appealed to the government to come to the aid of the community.
She also raised concerns about the lack of access to portable water in the area, stressing that the community still relies on stream water, which was the same source of water she grew up with decades ago.
Mrs Malo, who prayed for the continued peace and progress of the nation, urged political leaders to put the welfare of the people above personal interests and to uphold the true values of democracy.
