Emulate MKO’s Legacies- Olaniyi To SDP State Chairmen

todayJune 11, 2025

Background

The Chairman, Forum of Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Femi Olaniyi has called on leaders of the party across board to emulate Moshood Abiola, MKO’s, legacy by leading with sincerity, unity, humility, and people-centered governance.

This is contained in a statement signed by him to Commemorate this year’s Democracy day in Abuja.

The statement appeals to members to renew their collective commitment to the values of democracy, unity, and progress that MKO Abiola lived and died for.

As we celebrate Democracy Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all SDP members across the 36 states andthe FCT. Let this day renew our collective commitment to the values of democracy, unity, and progress that MKO Abiola lived and died for” Olaniyi emphasizes.

Today, I use this opportunity to call on all SDP leaders across the nation to emulate MKO’s legacy to lead with sincerity, unity, humility, and people centered governance. Let us constructively position the party for national progress and relate with one another in love and mutual respect” Olaniyi states.

It advises members to adopt MKO’s mentality to build a Nigeria for Nigerians which is vital at the moment.

Nothing can be more important to us, as members of this noble party and citizens of this great country, than adopting MKO’s mentality to build a Nigeria for Nigerians” he stresses.

“Today, the 12th of June, stands as a monumental and unforgettable day in the political history of Nigeria, a day that we celebrate not only our democratic journey, but also the legacy of a true statesman, philanthropist, and icon of democratic struggle, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the duly elected President of Nigeria in 1993 under the banner of our great party, the Social Democratic Party, SDP.”

The statement describes MKO Abiola as not just a politician but a faithful, resilient, and passionate leader whose sincerity towards building a better Nigeria was unmatched.

His campaign in 1993 was the most collectively supported in Nigeria’s history, driven by his integrity, clear vision, and people-first ideology. The election that produced him as President was free, fair, and widely acclaimed across Nigeria, symbolizing a turning point in our national history, Olaniyi stresses.”

“As a man of deep patriotism and selfless philanthropy, MKO Abiola dedicated his immense wealth and influence to developing Nigeria, unlike many billionaires who reap from this country only to invest elsewhere”.

“He invested in business development, youth empowerment through sports, and political inclusiveness, while standing firm against foreign interests trying to dominate Nigeria’s internal affairs” Olaniyi notes.

“He believed Nigeria belonged to Nigerians and must be built by Nigerians. MKO Abiola was a builder of institutions, people, and ideas and created a structural legacy for the Social Democratic Party, one that has laid the foundation for the emergence of a new Nigeria through the SDP”.

He was a father to the nation, a party man to the core, and a visionary with the heart of the people.

On this significant day, I, Femi Olaniyi, Lagos State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party and Chairman of Chairmen of SDP Nigeria across the 36 states, and the FCT, proudly join millions of Nigerians to celebrate the enduring legacy of MKO Abiola”.

“We remember him not just as a past leader, but as the Ex-President of Nigeria, whose mandate, though unjustly denied in his lifetime, is now eternally affirmed in the hearts of Nigerians” he notes.

“May his gentle soul rest in the perfect peace, and may his sacrifices never be in vain” Olaniyi adds.
