As Nigeria continues its fight against insurgency and other security challenges, the unwavering commitment of the nation’s military troops deserves more than silent acknowledgment it calls for deep respect and national recognition.
From the frontlines of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East to various other theatres of operation across the country, Nigerian troops risk their lives daily to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens.
Their dedication, resilience, and courage under fire represent the highest form of patriotism.
A recent operational tour of the Operation Hadin Kai theatre revealed a clear picture of the intense sacrifices being made as soldiers operate under tough conditions, often far from home and family, and continue to push forward with an offensive strategy that has helped restore relative peace to many communities previously plagued by insurgent attacks.
Despite these efforts, many Nigerians remain unaware or indifferent to the personal and collective cost borne by these men and women in uniform. Experts believe this disconnect needs to be urgently addressed through sustained national orientation and civic education.
“We need to do more as a society to value and honour our troops,” said Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Theatre Commander Operation Hadin Kai. Our soldiers are not just fighting a war, they are defending the future of Nigeria.”
Public institutions, civil society organisations, and media outlets have been urged to amplify stories of heroism and sacrifice, while agencies like the National Orientation Agency, NOA are encouraged to intensify campaigns that instil pride in the nation’s military.
In addition to public respect, there are calls for tangible support, including improved welfare packages, provision of adequate operational equipment, and better post-service care to ensure troops feel truly valued.
“The sacrifices our troops make are not abstract,” said one security expert, Babajide Andrew .They bleed, they fell, and they kept standing for us. It’s time Nigerians truly stand with them.”
As the nation builds on recent security gains, recognising and respecting its military is not just a patriotic duty. It is a national imperative.
