The House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee has unveiled a detailed timeline for public hearings and meetings with key stakeholders as part of efforts to amend the country’s constitution.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the committee, said the House plans to meet with the Nigerian Governors Forum on July 23, 2025, to present bills under consideration and seek their support for passage.
This meeting also aims to secure buy-in and backing for the proposed amendments, particularly for contentious bills.
The committee will also hold a joint retreat with the Senate Constitution Review members and Speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly from September 25-28, 2025, to harmonize bills and ensure consistency across the country.

According to him, this retreat will play a crucial role in aligning legislative priorities and ensuring a unified approach to constitutional reform.
Additionally, the committee will engage with media executives on July 8 or 9, 2025, civil society organizations on July 3, 2025, and the diplomatic community at a Constitution Review Committee Diplomatic Dinner on June 20, 2025.
These engagements are designed to facilitate public discussions, debates, and education on constitutional issues, helping to build consensus and foster a sense of ownership among citizens.
Public hearings are scheduled for July, with zonal hearings taking place in the northern geopolitical zones from July 11-13, 2025, and in the southern geopolitical zones from July 18-20, 2025.
A national public hearing is also set for July 21, 2025, where stakeholders from across the country will have the opportunity to contribute to the constitutional review process.
The committee will also meet with the leadership of Nigeria’s 18 registered political parties on July 14, 2025, to gather their perspectives and ensure that the constitutional review process is inclusive and representative of the country’s diverse political landscape.
The House aims to pass the constitution review bills by December 2025, with a one-week plenary debate scheduled for October 7-9, 2025, and voting expected on October 14, 2025.
The bills will then be transmitted to state assemblies on October 30, 2025, marking a significant step in the constitutional amendment process.
The committee’s efforts aim to promote transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the constitutional review process, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged. By engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, the committee hopes to create a more robust and widely accepted constitution that reflects the will of the Nigerian people.
