North-East: Military To Strategise With Media For Better Security

todayMay 28, 2025

Background

The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has called for greater collaboration between the military and the media in shaping national discourse around security efforts in the North-East.

He made this call while hosting a team of Defence Correspondents led by the Deputy Director of Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Dahiru Abu-Mawashi, during their operational visit to the Theatre Command Headquarters in Maiduguri.

Major General Abubakar stressed the importance of accurate and responsible reporting in countering misinformation and strengthening public confidence. “This is not just a fight against terrorists—it’s a fight for the soul of Nigeria. Once we understand that, our unity and messaging become more effective,” he stated.

He warned against the dangers of fake news and recycled footage on social media, noting that some viral videos falsely depicting misconduct by troops date back nearly a decade. “Such misinformation distorts the truth and undermines trust. Verification must come before publication,” he cautioned.

The Commander reaffirmed the military’s commitment to professionalism and human rights, highlighting ongoing training in collaboration with international partners, including the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. “We’re not perfect, but we take accountability seriously—over 60 personnel are currently facing trials for various offences,” he noted.

On media coverage, he expressed concern that the military’s achievements often go underreported. “When an officer falls in battle, it makes headlines—but the neutralisation of 15 terrorists in the same operation barely gets mentioned. That imbalance affects public perception,” he said.

On his part the team leader, Brigadier General Abu-Mawashi explained that the visit was aimed at giving journalists firsthand insight into military operations and encouraging accurate reportage.

Strategic communication is about truth, clarity, and national interest. This visit is about bridging the gap between field realities and public understanding,” he said.

Earlier, Major Ademola Owolana briefed the media team on operational progress, including gains against ISWAP and JAS elements, the recovery of weapons, rescue operations, and improved inter-service coordination.

He also cited ongoing threats such as IEDs, drone attacks, and arms smuggling, often facilitated by corrupt actors and local collaborators.

He added that stabilisation efforts have supported public events and community engagement initiatives, contributing to a return to normalcy in parts of the region.

As the military navigates the evolving dynamics of irregular conflict, the leadership expressed optimism that closer engagement with the media will help counter misinformation and foster lasting peace.

The visiting journalists are expected to conduct field visits, interact with troops and residents, and independently verify military activities and human rights compliance.
