Troops of Operation HAdin Kai OPHK, backed by aerial support, on Tuesday thwarted a coordinated attack by Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents on their base in New Marte, Borno State, killing scores of terrorists and recovering a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device VBIED and several motorcycles.
According to a statement by Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations,
Captain Reuben Kovangiya the terrorists launched the failed attack in the early hours of Tuesday in an attempt to infiltrate the military location.
The statement explains that the ground troops quickly responded and engaged the assailants in a firefight, with reinforcements from 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and 134 Special Forces Battalion swiftly joining the battle.
It further stated that the Air Component of OPHK provided critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance ISR alongside offensive strikes that decimated fleeing insurgents with two soldiers tragically losing their lives in the confrontation.
The statement noted that following the clash, troops combing the area recovered a VBIED-laden SUV abandoned by the terrorists as they fled and several motorcycles used by the insurgents were also destroyed in targeted airstrikes.
In a related operation, troops repelled another attack on the Forward Operating Base at Kumshe, dealing further blows to the terrorists.
The successful operations, underline a renewed synergy between air and ground forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism, with a firm commitment to restoring peace and enabling socio-economic development across Nigeria’s North East region.
