The House of Representatives has adopted a motion urging the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, to promote tree planting in Abuja, citing the numerous benefits of trees to human existence.
This was sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by Ahmed Saba from Kwara State at Plenary, who said trees are essential for providing food, shelter, medicine, and tools, as well as combating global warming and improving air quality.
Presenting his motion, Mr Saba noted that trees can help reduce wind speeds, prevent flooding and soil erosion, and even reduce stress and depression levels
Saba however expressed regret that tree-planting culture is almost non-existent in the FCT, with the felling of trees becoming a habit, especially at construction sites.
The lawmaker is concerned that the FCT Administration has not shown determination to promote tree planting despite research showing that trees can reduce the temperature in a city by up to 7°C.
To address this, the House has mandated the Committee on the Federal Capital Territory to work with the FCTA and other relevant authorities to put policies in place to ensure massive tree planting to protect the environment.
