todayMay 19, 2025

Background

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC is taking steps to curb the proliferation of fake driving schools as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce crashes.

Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed stated this in Abuja at the commencement of a two day national workshop for driving school proprietors and instructors with the theme :Entrenching Highway Safety in Nigeria Through Standardized Drivers and Riders Training.

The Corps Marshal emphasised that human error remained the leading cause of road traffic accidents hence the need for FRSC to build the capacity of identified driving schools for effective traffic management in the country.

He, however noted that proper driver education through accredited institutions was essential in minimising such errors and improving safety on the highways.

“We have been on this for a long time. You cannot completely eliminate fake driving schools, but with efforts like this, we will reduce them to the barest minimum”.

“Our focus is to identify and support genuine schools that have the capacity to transform driver behavior and reduce crashes.

According to him, driving schools serve as the first line of defense in preparing drivers to operate vehicles safely, hence repeated training remains a key strategy.”

“The engagement with school operators was part of a nationwide campaign that would cover key cities including Lagos, Oshogbo, and Kano” .

Mallam Shehu Mohammed expressed confidence that the series of engagements would foster a robust community of stakeholders committed to upholding safety standards and restoring integrity to driver training in Nigeria.

In his key note address, the Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Transport Secretariat,
Mr Elechi Chinedu said the federal government placed premium to training, especially on activities that could save lives on the roads .

Elechi Chinedu commended FRSC for various initiatives towards reducing road crashes.

According to him, the country can only experience rapid development when they have safer roads for socio economic activities.

Representative of the Driving Schools, Mr Ola Ogedengbe said the organization was ready to support every effort towards checking the activities of substandard driving schools in the country.

Mr Ogedengbe reiterated the commitment of members towards the realization of the FRSC vision.
