In a bid to foster a positive shift in the style of news reporting in Nigeria, Radio Nigeria, Abuja Operations, has trained some of its staff on solutions journalism, an approach that offers a more complete and hopeful view of society by focusing on effective responses to social problems.
The training, sponsored by Solutions Journalism Network, took place at Radio House, Abuja, and was facilitated by a team of Media experts led by media Olatokewa Ayoade. She highlighted that solutions journalism provides information essential for solving problems and inspires positive changes in the society, contrary to the often negative narrative of traditional journalism.
Ayoade likened journalists to nutritionists, stressing the need for a “balanced information diet” so that citizens are not left overwhelmed with negative stories.
She urged reporters to be intentional about societal issues and give more spotlight on positive stories, stressing that many individuals and organizations are making meaningful contributions that go largely unreported.

The session was also graced by the General Manager of ClickNaija, Mrs. Ehi Ohiani, who expressed optimism that the training would inspire Radio Nigeria, the largest Radio network in Africa, to help shape a more uplifting national discourse.
She encouraged participants to actively seek out stories that drive positive change, noting that the constant consumption of negative news is one of the eight habits harmful to the brain.
Several participants expressed enthusiasm about the training, describing it as insightful and timely. The participants also indicated readiness to put into practice their newly acquired knowledge and skills.
