Osimhen Record Breaking Brace Seals Turkish Cup for Galatasaray

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, has broken Mario Jardel’s record as he highest foreign goal scorer in a single season for Galatasaray after successfully lifting his Maiden trophy with the Turkish giants on Wednesday May 14, 2024, when they emerge 3-0 winners over Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup finals.

Barış Alper Yılmaz put the heavy favorites ahead in the 11th minute after an assist from Yunus Akgün to give Galatasaray a halftime lead.

Osimhen who is currently on loan from Napoli engraved his name in the Istanbul side history as the first ever foreign player in club’s history to score 35 goals in a single season after scoring a brace to complete Akgün’s hat trick of assist in the 46th and 63rd minute keeping their hopes for a domestic double.

The prolific Nigerian striker emerged Turkish golden boot winner with 5 goals.

Galatasaray’s journey to the 2025 Turkish Cup final began in Group C where they finished as runners-up. Their group stage saw them draw 2-2 at home against Başakşehir and 0-0 at home against Konyaspor, alongside a 4-1 away victory over Boluspor. In the quarter-finals, they faced a fierce Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe, securing a 2-1 away win.

Osimhen was crucial in this match, scoring both of Galatasaray’s goals. The semi-final pitted them against Konyaspor again, this time away, and Galatasaray delivered a dominant 5-1 victory. The 26 year old striker continued his stellar cup form, opening the scoring with a header and later providing an assist for one of Rolland Sallai’s goals.

Meanwhile, Trabzonspor’s path to the final saw them top Group A with two wins and a draw. They started with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Alanyaspor, followed by a 2-2 away draw with İskenderunspor, and concluded the group stage with a convincing 5-2 home victory over Çaykur Rizespor.

In the quarter-finals, they faced a tough challenge against Bodrum FK at home, eventually winning 3-2 in extra time. Their semi-final match was against Göztepe at home, where they secured a 2-0 victory to book their place in the final against Galatasaray.

In 39 appearances for Galatasaray, Osimhen netted 35, in the Süper Lig, he scored 24 goals in 28 matches, also providing 5 assists, while scoring 7 goals in Europa League matches and 5 goals in the Turkish Cup games.
