Background

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu has declared that climate change is a pressing crisis in the country, affecting millions of people.

Kalu stated this in Abuja during a meeting with representatives from the National Council on the Climate Change Secretariat, NCCCS and the Green Climate Fund, GCF, Led by the Director General, Nkiruka Madueke.

He highlighted the devastating impact of climate change on Nigeria, citing flooding, desertification, and erosion as major concerns.

The Lawmaker noted that over 4.4 million people have been affected by flooding since 2022, with significant economic losses.

The Deputy speaker emphasized the importance of collective action to mitigate the effects of climate change, stressing that the Green Climate Fund can play a vital role in supporting Nigeria’s climate goals.

He also highlighted the need for operationalizing the Climate Change Fund, established by the 2021 Climate Change Act.

Kalu called for a strategic partnership with the Green Climate Fund to activate the fund and attract climate finance, saying, “Climate finance is the oxygen of climate action.”
