Road Safety: FRSC Advocates National Non- motorised Transportation Policy

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC is advocating the National Non-Motorized Transportation Policy at the State and Local government levels to protect the rights of all road users.

The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed while speaking with News men in Abuja on the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety week said the National Policy would address inadequate road infrastructure such as Sidewalks, Pedestrian bridges and Cycling Lanes on Nigerian roads.

Mallam Shehu Mohammed explained that walking and cycling are not mere recreational activities but primary modes of transportation for citizens, including school children,traders, workers, and low income earners .

Represented by the Deputy corps Marshal, Policy Research and Statistics Clement Oladele, The FRSC Boss reiterated that the Corps as the lead traffic management agency would continue to work with stakeholders to drive interventions on saving lives.

According to him, FRSC recognizes the rights of every individual to mobility options that are safe, accessible and sustainable, taking into account the need for pedestrians and cyclists.

The representative of Civil Society Organizations Dr Yusuf John- Suberu called on the government to give attention to the vulnerable road users by ensuring that road designs consider people with disabilities.

Dr Yusuf John-Suberu pledged the commitment of civil society organizations to road safety awareness to reduce road fatalities and injuries.

In a remark, President Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association, ROSOWA Dr Nafisat Shehu- Mohammed said the group would embark on motor park sensitization across the country.
to promote safer Roads.

Dr Mohammed added that the Association would also visit hospitals and orphanages to encourage victims of Road accidents as part of activities to mark the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week with the Theme: STREETS FOR LIFE: Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe.

Representatives of the World Health, Directorate of State Service, Non Governmental Organizations pledged to support initiatives aimed at ensuring effective traffic management in the country.
