Unapproved Buildings In Wumba Must Be Demolished – AMMC

todayMay 9, 2025

Background

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has insisted that unapproved buildings in Wumba or any other structure without government approval must be demolished despite public outcry.

Coordinator of the council, Mr. Felix Obuah, said allowing illegal structures or violations of the Abuja master plan may bring devastating consequences.

He stated this in Wumba on the second day of the ongoing city sanitation exercise embarked upon by strategic agencies monitoring development in the city.

Obuah had, a few days ago, led other senior officials of the FCTA Administration to supervise the demolition of illegal structures at Guzape and Utako.

He described the illegal activities as a direct violation of the master plan and a threat to public safety, especially as the areas are on drainage channels.

Obuah stressed that the FCT Administration, under Nyesom Wike, remains committed to restoring the Abuja master plan and preventing unregulated development in line with the FCT building guidelines.

“We are matching the Minister’s vision with action. Our job at AMMC is to sanitize the city, and we will not back down.”

Obuah also confirmed that similar enforcement operations are ongoing in three other parts of the capital, targeting land grabbers and unapproved developments.

“This is not an isolated case. Wherever people have built illegally, we will bring those structures down. There is no going back.”

The AMMC boss assured residents that no effort or cost will be spared in protecting lives and maintaining the integrity of the city’s environmental and planning systems.

On his part, the Director of the Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, said the Council has a zero-tolerance stance on land encroachment and unauthorized development.

He confirmed that his department had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to a developer in the Wumba District to report to his office with valid title documents or face the full wrath of the law.

“We invited the developer to provide legal documents. There was nothing, no approval, no allocation. Instead of stopping, work continued, so we had no choice but to act,” Galadima explained.
