The Governor of Benue state, Hyacinth Alia and Zamfara state Dauda Lawal, have failed to appear before the House of Representatives Public Petitions Committee.
The committee had summoned them to address allegations of illegal suspensions of lawmakers in their states following a Petition by a civil society group, Guardians of Rule of Law and Democracy, through their legal representative, Samuel Ihensekhie.
The group alleged that the state assemblies had suspended lawmakers without justification and urged the National Assembly to intervene.
In Zamfara, four APC and six PDP lawmakers were suspended for allegedly holding an illegal plenary, leading to a dispute over the speakership position.
In Benue, 13 lawmakers were suspended for three months for opposing the removal of the state’s chief judge.
The committee noted that the absence of the governors would not hinder its work and emphasized the need for due process in addressing the allegations.
A new hearing date has been scheduled for May 14, 2025.
