The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has called for the ethical application of Artificial Intelligence in journalism.
Commemorating World Press Freedom Day in Abuja, the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, highlighted AI’s potential benefits, such as efficiency and fact-checking, while also raising concerns about authorship, bias, and accountability.
Ike emphasized the need for journalists to adapt to digital innovations while maintaining journalistic integrity and press freedom.
She encouraged collaboration among stakeholders to ensure AI serves as a tool for progress, not manipulation, reaffirming the union’s commitment to fostering ethical journalism, enhancing professional standards, and promoting digital literacy.
Ike urged media professionals to uphold values of truth, fairness, and courage, noting that ethics of journalism remains unchanged despite technological evolution.
“The World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3rd annually highlights the importance of press freedom and governments’ obligation to uphold the right to freedom of expression.
This year’s theme “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” explores the transformative yet complex role of AI in journalism, highlighting both its empowering potential and the ethical dilemmas it presents.
