Strengthening Collaboration To Boost Health Of Livestock
This year’s World Veterinary Day, with the theme “Animal Health Takes a Team” carries profound significance within Nigeria’s veterinary community, as it emphasizes the essential collaborative efforts, needed to advance animal health nationwide.
As veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff unite, they exemplify a collective commitment to improving livestock welfare, an endeavor that is crucial for ensuring food security, enhancing public health, and fostering the national economy.
The recent establishment of the new Ministry of Livestock Development brings renewed optimism for a structured and strategic approach to livestock management in Nigeria.
This ministry therefore aims to foster cooperation among various stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, veterinary professionals, and government agencies, all aligned with the principles of teamwork.
Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, this emphasis on collaboration is integral to realizing a resilient agricultural sector that is capable of self-sustaining growth.
By adopting a one health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of animal and human health, Nigeria can effectively address critical challenges such as zoonotic diseases, boost animal productivity, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Also, investing in veterinary education, infrastructure, and workforce development is crucial to building a resilient health system, that can effectively respond to current and future challenges of insecurity, in human and public health.
Besides this, investment in veterinary infrastructure, including clinics and mobile vaccination units, is crucial to ensure that, remote communities have access to essential services, which has been captured in the renewed hope agenda of the present administration.
As Nigeria joins in the celebration of World Veterinary Day, it is important to acknowledge that the health of livestock is ‘intricately linked to the overall health of the people.
This occasion serves as a rallying point for all stakeholders in Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, encouraging a united front in the pursuit of excellence in veterinary care and ultimately paving the way for a healthier and more prosperous Nigeria.
