Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) crowned new champions as Remo Stars clinched their first major top flight title in the league with a 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes in Ikenne.
The Sky Blue Boys needed a win in their match day 35 game, after second place Rivers United fell 0-2 to Kano Pillars in the first game of the match day. And they left it until the 84th minute as Olamilekan Adedapo’s missile-strike found the back of the net.
Remo stars become the first privately owned club in 20 years to lift the NPFL title and the first title for a south West club since Julius Berger in 2000.
The newly crowned champions had constantly been in top 3 positions of the league for four years in a row, finishing 3rd position in the 2021/22, and 2nd position in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, and now finally engraved their name in gold in the history of the NPFL.
In other match day 35 games a flurry of action across various centers, as in Umuahia, Abia Warriors continued their push for a continental spot with a convincing 3-1 victory over Shooting Stars. Sunshine Stars boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 2-0 win against Katsina United in Ijebu Ode, while Bayelsa United secured a 2-1 home win against El-Kanemi Warriors in Yenagoa. Nasarawa United edged out Heartland 1-0 in Lafia, and in a five-goal thriller in Uyo, Akwa United defeated ten-man Ikorodu City 2-1. Kwara United also recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory over relegated Lobi Stars in Ilorin.
Meanwhile former African champions Enyimba FC delivered a blow to their Oriental rivals, securing a 2-1 away win against Enugu Rangers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Meanwhile, in Jos, Plateau United managed a 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance in a keenly contested affair.
