todayApril 25, 2025

Background

Former World Boxing Federation Cruiserweight Champion (WBF), Bashiru Lawrence Ali popularly known as Bash Ali has called on Nigeria president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to re-inaugurate the Bash Ali Boxing Project Local Organising Committee set years back for his Guinness World Record Boxing Championship fight in Nigeria.

The Order Office of the president of the Niger, (OON) holder made the call during a press conference on Thursday 24th April 2025, in Abuja.

Bash Ali who is chasing this dream for nineteen years believes the fight if staged, will be the most lucrative sport event ever in the history of Nigeria

“Mr president, in the spirit of the renewed hope agenda, I’m respectfully asking you to personally re-inaugurate the Bash Ali boxing project Local Organizing Committee. So all the obstacles caused by corruption can be knocked out. I don’t have to convince anybody. Nigerians know the whole world knows that, Guinness World Record fight has never heard outside of America. This is gonna be the first and the most lucrative, so you don’t have to convince anybody.”

While the sixty-nine (69) year old commended past administration since 2006 for setting up three LOCs on his behalf, he boldly claimed that corruption in the administration had been the major problem hindering the Gunnies world record bout.

“To make this historic event a reality, the Federal Government of Nigeria has on three occasions inaugurated the Bash Ali Boxing Project Local Organizing Committee. First by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2006, second by Good Luck Jonathan in 2014, and the third one was by Mohamed Buhari in 2019.

Despite all this inauguration, nothing positive has happened due to corruption”

Also speaking, National President of the Bash Ali Fans Club of Nigeria, pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fulfil his promise of staging this remarkable fight.

“I’m using this opportunity to tell Mr. President, GCF, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that I single-handedly, we went to Ekiti with Bash Ali during the campaign. We met with him, and he shook us, and he promised us to do this Guinness World Record fight. I use this opportunity to plead to Mr. President to forget about anything, and go straight to the point to make this Guinness World Record fight to become a reality all over the world. That’s what I have to tell Mr. President. Thank you very much.”

Organizers anticipate that the Guinness World Record Boxing Championship will draw around 134 countries, and former Unified boxing champion Andy Ruiz Jr. will face Bash Ali.

Ali started his professional boxing career in 1978, without any amateur experience, and quickly establishing himself in the cruiserweight division. His journey saw him clinch numerous regional and international titles, marking significant milestones such as the USBA Cruiserweight Title in 1980, the NABF Cruiserweight Title in 1985, and the WBF Cruiserweight Title on September 11, 2000, when he defeated Terry Ray.

These victories solidified his reputation as a formidable and determined fighter, making him the only boxer to have won every conceivable cruiserweight title.
