NAWOJ, NCWS Strengthen Ties For Women Advancement

todayApril 16, 2025

Background

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the National Council of Women Societies, NCWS, are collaborating to foster unity and drive collective action for women’s advancement in Nigeria.

The commitment was made when the NAWOJ National President, Aisha Ibrahim, led the FCT NAWOJ Executive members on a working visit to the NCWS National Secretariat in Abuja.

She reaffirmed NAWOJ’s renewed commitment to rekindle the relationship with the NCWS, stressing the importance of unity among women-led organizations.

According to her, it was time for women-led organizations to close ranks and build a stronger voice for Nigerian women.

She praised the leadership of NCWS for their purposeful direction and vowed that NAWOJ would no longer remain on the sidelines on women’s issues.

She also made a passionate appeal for NAWOJ to reclaim its historical position as the Public Relations Officer in the NCWS.

We are ready to earn that seat again, through service, support, and solidarity.
Paying our dues goes beyond money. It’s about standing by each other, sharing knowledge, and lifting each other up.

“For some years now, NAWOJ has not played an active role in NCWS affairs, but that ends now. We are back, not just to observe, but to support, contribute, and collaborate fully,” Ibrahim declared.

The NAWOJ National President, therefore, called for the establishment of a regular forum between both organizations to foster communication and shared progress.

Our mission is not just about us as individuals or as organizations but about the broader movement for women’s issues and representation. We have the power to inspire the next generation of women journalists and leaders, and it is our responsibility to pave the way for them.”

“Together, as allies and partners, we can achieve great things. Let us commit to working hand in hand, supporting one another, and championing the voices of women everywhere.”

In her heartfelt response, NCWS National President Princess Edna Azura welcomed the collaboration, affirming that unity is central to the Council’s mission.

Collaboration is what we stand for here as a council because we can’t do it alone. But when we come together, like you asked, we should, I think that is when we will make a headway,” she said.

Princess Azura acknowledged NAWOJ’s past contributions, particularly in the media, and expressed readiness to explore a return of the journalists’ body to a more formal role in the Council.

There is a position you mentioned that it was reserved for you over the years. Yes, the PRO and that is how it should be, actually,” she affirmed.

The high point of the event was NAWOJ’s readiness to clear the backlog of its 21-year annual dues as an affiliate of NCWS, and the offer of discounted dues to NAWOJ by the NCWS National President, Princess Edna Azura.
