Seat Reservation Bill Important In Empowering Women – Kalu

todayMarch 28, 2025

Background

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the importance of the Seat Reservation Bill in empowering women to take their rightful place in the corridors of power.

Speaking at a dinner organized by the Osasu Show Foundation, United Nations Women, and the Policy Innovation Center, Kalu reiterated his commitment to championing the cause of women through legislative interventions.

The Seat Reservation for Women Bill (HB1349), sponsored by Kalu, seeks to reserve seats for women in the National and State Assemblies, aiming to dismantle systemic barriers and create a legislature that truly mirrors the nation’s diversity.

Kalu stressed that the bill is not about charity, but about justice, strategy, and national prosperity.

He emphasized that a representative government must reflect the people it serves and that women’s inclusion is imperative for achieving comprehensive and sustainable national development.

The Deputy Speaker acknowledged the challenges ahead but reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing the noble cause.

He drew inspiration from the Beijing Declaration, which has transformed the women’s rights agenda globally.

The deputy speaker emphasized the importance of collective action in dismantling systemic barriers and fostering environments where every individual can thrive.
