todayMarch 26, 2025

Background

The House of Representatives in Nigeria is taking significant steps to improve healthcare, particularly in eye care, through legislative measures.

At a recent public hearing on three bills organized by the house committee on speciality healthcare, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas highlighted bills aimed at enhancing vision and optical health.

Represented by George Ozodinobi,
Dr Abbass noted that the proposed legislation includes establishing the Federal Institute of Vision and Optical Research and the Federal College of Optometry in Rivers State, as well as amending the National Eye Centre Act to expand specialist eye care services.

Committee Chairman, Alex Egbona assured a thorough review of the bills, while the sponsor of the bill, Victor Obuzor stressed the urgent need for specialized eye care, citing the persistence of eye diseases despite Nigeria’s long standing optometry program.
