HOR Supports FRSC’s Fight Against Fake Number Plates

todayMarch 19, 2025

Background

The House of Representatives has declared its support for the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, efforts to tackle the growing issue of fake vehicle number plates in the country.

This endorsement comes after the FRSC recorded 7,798 arrests related to number plate offences in just two months.

The Chairman, House Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adesida, made the declaration during an interactive with the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed

Adesida stated that the House will continue to provide legislation that will enable the FRSC to effectively clamp down on fake vehicle registration numbers and ensure road safety and national security.

According to Adesida, the session was prompted by concerns over the increase in the proliferation of fake number plates in the country, which poses a significant threat to public safety and national security

During the session, the Corps Marshal briefed the committee on FRSC’s efforts to address the issue despite resistance from owners of vehicles with fake Number plates.

He highlighted the commission’s focus on addressing critical issues affecting road safety and national security.

Mallam Mohammed assured the committee that the FRSC was committed to improving the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal to prevent vehicles with fake registration from operating on Nigerian roads.

Speaking on the ongoing clamp down on fake numbers plates, Mallam Mohammed said that the FRSC’s statistics revealed a disturbing trend of number plate-related offences, with many motorists using fake or unauthorized number plates.

“This trend poses significant security risks, hindering efforts to track and identify vehicles involved in crimes.”

The Corps Marshal appreciated the National Assembly’s support, describing it as a significant milestone in the battle against fake number plates.

He urged lawmakers to strengthen existing laws and regulations to ensure offenders are brought to justice.

The FRSC Boss commended the National Assembly for its commitment to road safety and national security, urging all Nigerians to support the FRSC’s efforts by obtaining genuine number plates and reporting fake ones to the nearest FRSC Command.
