Background

Creating Digital Economy Through Nig’s Communication & 5G Technology

Satellite Communication is a wireless means of transmission of materials, which, when properly utilized, will bring about great and positive development on the economic growth of any nation.

The development of satellite as a space technology has proven to be instrumental in guaranteeing the availability of speedy access to real time data and spatial information, which have impacted all aspects of human development.

The Federal Government of Nigeria being fully aware of the positive implication of the aforementioned in its aspiration towards the attainment of rapid and sustainable socio-economic development took conscious steps to facilitate the launch of NIGCOMSAT-1 in order to key into the auspicious communication technological trend.

The agency was approved by the federal government as a national priority project among many others in November 2003 and subsequently became a reality with its successful launch in May 2007.

The initiative, no doubt remains a strategic and bold step in the development of a key ICT infrastructure that many experts noted will forever change the destiny of not only Nigeria but the entire continent of Africa if properly harnessed.

The federal government has gone further to launch a national policy on 5G with a directive to security agencies to leverage on the technology when deployed to tackle security challenges.

It is important to note that 5G is significantly faster than earlier digital technologies as it provides neär real-time communication to effectively deploy robotics, autonomous vehicles; augmented and virtual reality to address security challenges.

More so, the technology is designed to support virtually every other sector of the economy including enhanced connectivity, improved healthcare, and support for Education while fostering smart cities and boosting agriculture amongst others in line with the policy trust of a digital economy.

Both technologies were designed to provide wide coverage to address the problem of communication, particularly in the areas of rural telephone, radio, and television broadcasting.

It also include Data transfer, Tele-medicine and conferencing, e-commerce and government as well as internet data transmissions, and supporting military communications, internet, and broadband services especially in remote areas.

The Nigeria Satellite Communication technologies are priority projects for the Federal Government hence the need to upgrade their operations for efficient service delivery to the nation’s communications sector which must equally take into consideration revenue generation for government and Nigerians in particular Some Information and Communication Technology, ICT Experts are therefore of the opinion that, for Nigeria to make any headway in its quest to bridge the technological gap through communication satellite, increase in penetration of broadband services, adequate funding are urgently needed.

Worth mentioning is the fact that, with the huge number of Nigerians who are subscribers of both internet and broadband services, colossal sums in billions of dollars are also paid as subscription by different institutions and MDAs of government in Nigeria to foreign communication satellite owners for the provision of telecommunication and broadcasting services.

ICT experts posited that this huge revenue will remain in the country if the Nigeria communication Satellite and 5G technologies are designed to work for the citizens at minimal cost.
