The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to block internet websites hosting pornographic content and sanction internet service providers that fail to comply.
The resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by member representing
Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency in Kastina State, Dalhatu shehu, who said that cyber pornography is a growing global problem that requires immediate attention.
In his lead debate, Shehu noted that Nigeria is a highly religious country where nudity and obscenity are forbidden and that countries across Asia and the Middle East have enacted legislations that banned pornography
The lawmaker also expressed concern about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content, including promotion of adultery and prostitution.
Adopting the motion, the Speaker Dr Abbas Tajudeen mandated the relevant committees to ensure implementation and report back within four weeks.
