In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing rise in cybercrime, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo.”

This phenomenon, which involves internet fraud, identity theft, and other forms of online scams, has become a significant social and economic issue, particularly among the youths.

The term “Yahoo Yahoo” originated from the early days of internet fraud in Nigeria, where scammers use Yahoo email accounts to perpetrate their schemes.

The rise of Yahoo Yahoo can be attributed to several factors.

First is Nigeria’s high unemployment rate, which, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, stands at over 33 per cent as of 2023.

With these limited prospects for legitimate employment, some youths have turned to cybercrime as a means of survival.

Social media platforms have become a fertile ground for scammers to target victims, both locally and internationally.

The quest for material wealth and success has also created a culture where the end justifies the means, in a country where majority are poor and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening.

Also, the pressure to achieve financial success at all costs has driven many young people to engage in Yahoo Yahoo.

The glorification of wealth in Nigerian music, movies, and social media has further reinforced the idea that success is measured by material possessions, regardless of how they are acquired.

One of the most significant consequences of the Yahoo Yahoo syndrome is its impact on the economy.

The influx of illicit money into the system has contributed to inflation, particularly in urban areas where many Yahoo Boys reside.

These youths spend their ill-gotten wealth on luxury items, expensive cars, and high-end real estate.

The housing market has been particularly affected in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and Port Harcourt.

It is unfortunate that some parents support their children in these criminal activities.

In some cases, parents are aware that their children are involved in cybercrime but will choose to turn a blind eye because of the financial benefits they are deriving from it.

Some parents see their children’s involvement in Yahoo Yahoo as being social and a way out of poverty.

The glorification of wealth in Nigerian culture has also created a distorted value system where success is equated with material possessions, regardless of how it is acquired.

Addressing the Yahoo Yahoo syndrome will require a multi- faceted approach that involves the government, civil society, religious organizations, and the family as the first agent of socialization.

There is the need for increased awareness and education about the dangers of cybercrime.

Youths must be aware of the legal and moral implications of engaging in Yahoo Yahoo, as well as the long-term consequences for their lives and careers.

The government must also play their role in tackling the root causes of cybercrime.

This includes creating more job opportunities for youths, improving access to quality education, and providing vocational training programmes that will equip youths with the skills they need to succeed in the legitimate job market.

The government must strengthen its legal framework to combat cybercrime by ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that the proceeds of crime are confiscated.

Religious and community leaders must always emphasize the importance of hard work, integrity, and ethical behaviour, to reshape societal attitudes towards wealth and success.

Parents must take responsibility for their children’s actions by encouraging them to pursue legitimate means of earning a living.
