First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has thrown her weight behind the seat reservation bill for women in parliament urging lawmakers to expedite the bill’s passage.
The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, aims to reserve seats for women in the National Assembly.
Speaking at the Art for Governance Exhibition in Abuja, organised by the office of the deputy speaker and ElectHer, an Advocacy group for women empowerment, Senator Tinubu Represented by Hajiya Fatima Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the importance of women’s leadership in shaping Nigeria’s future.
In his remarks, the deputy speaker, Benjamin Kalu, decried the underrepresentation of women in governance, stressing that the bill is about justice and equal representation.
The CEO of ElectHER, Ibijoke Faborode, highlighted the importance of gender-inclusive governance in fostering stronger democratic institutions and socio-economic growth.
The Minister of Women Affairs and other notable personalities expressed their commitment to ensuring the bill’s passage.
Nigeria currently ranks low in women’s representation in parliament, with only 4 women senators and 16 women representatives in the 469-member National Assembly.
