HOR Takes Step To Achieve Gender Balance In Governance

todayMarch 4, 2025

Background

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, has reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to achieving gender balance in the country’s politics and governance.

Speaking to a delegation of British parliamentarians in Abuja, Dr. Abbas emphasizes the House’s commitment to ensuring gender parity, citing the creation of dedicated committees for women and youths.

In a statement in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Musa Abdullahi, Dr Abbas highlights the diverse nature of the 10th House, with seven different political parties represented, noting that female representatives hold key leadership positions.

To achieve gender parity, Abbas proposes a legislation to allocate 33% of parliamentary seats to women and 30% of non-elective positions across all tiers of government and drew inspiration from similar initiatives in Uganda and Tanzania, which have shown promising results.

Abbas also acknowledged the role of Nigeria’s President and First Lady in supporting the legislature’s efforts to promote gender inclusion.

The First Lady, a three-term senator, has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and empowerment.

The Speaker sought support from the UK parliament, stressing the need for advice and collaboration to overcome the challenges that have hindered progress on this issue in the past.

He expressed optimism that, with collective effort, the constitution amendment exercise would succeed in ensuring women’s inclusion in governance.

Leader of the UK delegation, Kate Ofunne Osamor emphasizes the importance of strengthening parliamentary diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UK, as well as promoting diversity and gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s legislature.

The meeting between the Nigeria and UK parliamentarians provided an opportunity for knowledge sharing and exchange of ideas on best practices in promoting diversity and inclusion in governance.

Other members of the UK delegation asked questions on various aspects of Nigeria’s legislative practices, including the leadership structure and composition of the House.

The Speaker and other Nigerian lawmakers provided insights into the workings of the House and its committees.

The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK, particularly in the areas of governance, democracy, and human rights.
