Member representing Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency of Benue State, Mr. Terseer Ugbor has emphasized the need for a federal polytechnic in Adikpo to address the educational imbalance in the state.
He stated this at a one day public hearing on a bill for an Act to establish Federal Polytechnic Adikpo Benue State, organized by the House Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education.
Mr Ugbor, who is the sponsor of the bill, highlighted the stark imbalance within the state, particularly in his senatorial district, Benue North-East, which lacks any federal institution of higher learning despite producing five vice chancellors.
The Lawmaker went down memory lane, noting that Senator Barnabas Gemade initiated the groundwork for the federal polytechnic during the 8th National Assembly, however the bill failed to pass in the previous assembly, leaving the community’s hopes dashed.
According to him, the proposed polytechnic aims to provide a pathway for further education and contribute to national progress, offering programs in high-demand fields like information technology, engineering, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
Ugbor urged his colleagues and stakeholders to support the bill to enable students to benefit from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND.
Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, Faud Laguda, also emphasized the importance of technical education for national development, stating that “the establishment of this institution is a crucial step in bridging the gap between knowledge and employment.
